Elevator Action Deluxe is an arcade PSN title that conjurs up past failed childhood memories for me. You see, as a kid i always had a hard time playing the original back in the day. When i was a kid gamer i just didn’t have the patience to play any type of stealth game. Ok lets try and move on, the past is the past and this is the present. Square Enix developed and published this re-imagined Elevator Action Deluxe. This game did release back on August 30, 2011. I’m just now finally gotten around to playing through its demo for my first article on Gamer Blog.

The story is about a secret agent who must infiltrate buildings that belong to a crime syndicate hell bent on creating a doomsday device to take over the world. I know very James Bondish. In order to prevent the develpment of the doomsday device the secret agent protagonist must snag secret documents kept behind red doors inside syndicate’s buildings.

The main menu featured sub-menus such as Story (Single Player), Story (Multiplayer), Competitive (Multiplayer), Agent Dossier, Rankings, How to Play & Options, Arcade Version and Downloadable Content. The only accessible menus in the demo were Story (Single Player), Competitive (Multiplayer), Agent Dossier and How to Play & Options. The Agent Dossier keeps tracks of all in-game stats and “Files” (there are ten).

Under the How to Play & Options you can check out the button layout for Elevator Action Deluxe. Duel Shock 3: LS-move, D-pad-move, L1-insert credit, Select-display/menu. Start-display, Square-attack, Triangle-position bomb, Circle-attack, RS-zoom in/out, X-jump. The controls did their job effectively. I experienced no lag or any odd wonky jumping, shooting setting bombs etc. For a 2D game where you have to walk around down escalators the controls were pretty good.

There are main missions as well a tutorial mission. I played the tutorial mission first which was very easy. The tutorial basicaly just points out the basics of gameplay. Behind red doors are secret documents. Some doors with icons have bombs or different guns you can use. There is a timer that you must be aware of when you start a mission. Pulling levers closes or opens traps. You can use melee as well guns. You can hide behind doors till alarms go off. Its all basic stuff regarding gameplay that even the original game game had when i think about it.

After the tutorial i played the story alone. The opening cutscene featured comicbook pictures telling the story and mission of the protagonist. I already said above what his mission was. The only differences between the story and tutorial is the text written cutscenes fleshing out the story for Elevator Action Deluxe. The bulidings you must infiltrate did feature different shapes. The first was the tower style while the second was more longitudinal like a motel. There were more traps and chances to get caught on the second stage “motel” level.

When you collect enough secret documents (usually two in the demo) you’re then able to exit the building and ride off in your cool red sportscar. This game is so “80′s” its not even funny. Elevator Action Deluxe was re-imagined with up to date visuals and sound design as you would expect. However, it hasn’t changed my mind in over twenty years. I still don’t like it. Thanks for reading.
