Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Developer: Monolith Productions, Genre: Action, Release Date: Feb 8, 2012, Rating: T, Systems: PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360.
Presentation: Gotham City Impostors is a downloadable arcade first-person shooter that combines fast frenetic gameplay with imaginative gadgets, maps and classes. I was fortunate enough to attain Gotham City Imposters for free via my PSN+ subscription. When thinking about this wacky first person shooter you have to talk about its technical issues unfortunately. Yea, this game doesn’t run as smooth or as consistent as I would have hoped (on PSN at least). Freezing, disconnects, dropped matches after you connect runs the gammit of this game’s technical issues. With that said when the game runs well its really fun to play. This game’s atmosphere makes you feel like a civilian joining a Batman or Joker gang and wreaking havoc around Gotham City. Gotham City Impostors has a humorous and fun atmosphere that doesn’t take itself too serious. The main menu screen adorned Play Now, Secret Identity, Track Record, Black Market and Help & Options. Keep in mind there is no single player in this game, its strictly a multiplayer type game to be played online.
Story: There isn’t a story per say, your just a civilian in Gotham who dresses up as a crime fighter for either Batman or Joker’s faction.
Visuals: Bland, static and washed-out. Gotham City Impostors uses the Unreal Engine but not so much in a good way. The graphics in this game just aren’t very good but the design and imagination of the maps, characters, gadgets, weapons was impressive.
Sound: I really enjoyed the music in Gotham City Impostors. It totally fits a comic-book atmosphere and the one liners the character’s make are funny. The sound effects of the gadgets and weapons were really memorable as well.
Gameplay: Gotham City Impostors is a fast frenetic first-person shooter that utilizes fun gadgets and imaginative perks to keep the gameplay fun. Gamemodes include Team Deathmatch, Psych Warfare, Fumigation and Bounty Hunter. All gameplay modes are good but some are near impossible to find a match in like Bounty Hunter. Finding Team Deathmatch matches was no problem however. As you play matches you earn XP. You can unlock Rampage perks, Fun Facts, Weapon Mods, Calling Cards and much more.
You can unlock and mod custom class loadouts as you build up your XP. As for the controls they are pretty good. The game plays more like a quick twitch style fps and the gadgets are easily accessible and makes a difference in-game. Asides from the bland visuals and connection issues throughout Gotham City Impostors along with its gunplay and customization its a really fun online shooter. The weapons all range from guns of all types to special superhero gadgets and abilities. There are plenty of classes to mess around with as well unlocks.
Replayability: Plenty of unlocks and customization regarding loadouts. Plenty of good maps to play on. DLC is also available. Its a true online multiplayer first-person shooter with a fun twist in atmosphere and gadgets. I say the replayability regarding Gotham City Impostors is really good.
Final Verdict: Gotham City Impostors (when it works) is a fun first person multiplayer shooter with plenty of imagination and fun gameplay. The bland visuals does take away from the end product however the replayability is high with this one.
