Little Big Planet 2 – Early Impressions
Little Big Planet 2 is a 3D platformer developed by Media Molecule and published by SCEA exclusively for the Playstation 3. In all honesty to even say Little Big Planet 2 is just a 3D platformer is just wrong. After spending some time in Little Big Planet 2′s world i can say for certain there are many different genres associated with this lovable title.
First off i played the first Little Big Planet to death. I got like over 70% trophies and bought that Metal Gear Solid add on. With that said, Little Big Planet 2 immediately raised the bar in almost every fashion. The graphics, music the presentation and creation. The levels being put out by the community has impressed me so far to say the least. I went into playing Little Big Planet 2 as “ok maybe there will be more genres of games to play”. What i got was an even more polished refined gaming experience.
You start out playing Little Big Planet much like the first. You have to dress up your sack person and then complete a tutorial level to unlock all the goodstuff. Right off the bat i can say playing the tutorial levels in Little Big Planet 2 are more entertaining than the first. The story revolves around your Sack person joining the Alliance and stopping the evil Negativatron from destroying Craftworld!
Little Big Planet 2′s story levels so far are better than Little Big Planet. Much of the story levels revolves around you using a new weapon whether its the new Grapling Hook that you must master in Davinci’s Hideout or the Grabinater tool to pick up big objects and throw them. So far i really do like the story levels more than in the first game. The boss fights i had so far have been pretty good as well.
The graphics are improved over the first game clearly. I notice more effects and crisper sharper textures than Little Big Planet 2. I’m pretty sure Media Molecule used the latest anti aliasing that all of Sony’s first party studios are using. The music so far much like in the last game was great. Little Big Planet 2 has great music. The music really is mood inducing stuff let me tell you. Its just good to see developers really raising their “game” up on sequels which Media Molecule appeared to have done.
So after completing the tutorial level that is Davinci’s Hideout i unlocked the community and level creator tools sections of Little Big Planet 2. I plan on writing different articles detailing the level creator tools when i build and publish a level. I also plan on chronicling my adventures in multiplayer and write about the community different levels. In a nutshell Little Big Planet is about the community. Creating , sharing and playing has always been Little Big Planet’s thing. And let me tell you now some of the levels i played on Little Big Planet 2 are really really really good.
Its true PC been making games out games for years with editor tools found in many of their games. For a console game Little Big Planet 2 is really impressive after playing some of these guys and gals levels. Like today i played a level that had a story, it had action it had qte’s and it had different perspectives ranging from top down gameplay to 2D side scroller.
Thats just one game. There are over 2 million levels published last time i checked. My one main complaint so far is the connection issues when loading levels with other players. The connection is horrible most of the times when i join other players as well. It skips, jumps and a “loading” sign pops on screen many times stopping gameplay all together.
I know its early so far. Little Big Planet is huge. It would take me years to write about everything thats inside this game. So far i can say for certain Little Big Planet 2 is more polished and refined game with more genres of games you can create. Its fun, charming addicting like the first. Expect my review later. Thanks for reading.
